A Preview of our Locations

In our group, we set out to gather photos and ideas for where our setting is going to be for some of the scenes in the music video; travelling across the River Thames all the way to Waterloo station we found some interesting backdrops.

Group Roles

This time, as a group we focused on assigning each member to a role so we could organise ourselves properly. However some of us have multiple roles in the group and all of us are contributing to the pre-production plan; collaborating with each other so we can all have a better sense of what we're aiming for and know what we're doing to make the video better. This would include ideas on visualising the video and camera shots from the producer.

Main Roles
  • Director - Aaron
  • Assistant Director/Actor - Mark
  • Cinematographer - Mark/Aaron/Irnadas
  • Main Performer/Producer/Location Scout - Spencer
  • Producer/Actor - Irnadas

Infinite Mix - Media Trip

To get inspiration for our music videos, we went to an exhibition in the Infinite Mix in '180 The Strand' near the Southbank Centre; featuring audio-video artworks by some of the world's leading artists. These included various types of cinema styled rooms, each with their individual set up of immersive multi-screens, projections a hologram and a 3D screen.

Each had a distinctive artist that had their work projected on the screen and rather having a story or narrative styled video, they were musically structured, like a music video. Kendrick Lamar was one of the featured artists and had his work projected simultaneously onto two screens, each with different visuals. This was our favourite as it is the most relevant to us as it was similar to a music video but had a unique look and because of this it gave us inspiration for our own video.

PRACTICE: Music Video - Stressed Out

For our preliminary task, we had to form a group and create a video for a music piece of our choice; deciding through many we chose a track from 'Twenty One Pilots'. Firstly, because it was in one of my case studies but most importantly the lyrics are rather slow considering it was in the rap genre therefore clearer to understand the lip sync and easier for us to memorise.

The task gave us a better insight to what it would be like while doing our final filming sessions during our actual music video. Overall we picked up some useful skills such as handling the camera, adapting the ISO and other properties to the lighting and editing in Premiere Pro.

However it took longer than expected, we had 2 sessions to film and managed to gather many clips that consisted of various settings and camera angles but during our editing sessions we had difficulties on the editing software as we weren't as experienced as we are now.

CASE STUDY 3: Young Guns - You Are Not (Lonely)

Music video by Young Guns, released on 'Wind-up' records on 4th of September, 2012 is from their second studio album, 'Bones'. The alternative rock band have composed a short narrative music video featuring the lead singer, Gustav Wood, as the protagonist; rewinding his actions throughout the whole video from the point he got run over. The theme would be on jealousy due to how it portrays him as lonely and rejected and how he murdered the man who was most likely to be with the protagonist's girlfriend. A cameo of a man from the band is also seen to be thrown out of his girlfriend's house which adds on to the theme of rejection.

With the story being cliche and simple, the video presents it well as the performance of the band seem to relate because they have problems with their relationships or other issues of their own such as the guitarist on the street who seems to be homeless or short of money. It links with the song as again, the motive is about loneliness so these people are portrayed to be alone and possibly vulnerable; referring back to the start of the video where the band members where seen to attack Gustav and continuing on to how others have treated him throughout the video.

Although there is no lip syncing involved, the music video not only has the lead singer as the actor but has many cameos of each band member, including the guitarists and drummer and all have individual roles as seen in different scenes of the video. The star, Gustav, has a dark look as to his outfit but his personality is not as clear because he could of murdered the man from either guilt or revenge. However he does not appear guilty but has a more serious look due to his slow walk and negative interaction with the members of the public.

Camera angles do not vary as much because the shots consist of mid as well as some full body shots of the protagonist in still and tracking movements. This is backed by slow motion for special effects and artificial, glaring visuals from the sun that appear for brief moments. For mise-en-scene, the location is not established however it seems like it could be set around New York because of the Metro and the train he got into being at 57th street, which is located in Manhattan.

The audience that could be targeted are those who might have issues of their own, just like what the music is based on; however it could simply be for a younger audience in the 15 to 20 margin.

Choosing this music video gave me ideas for the effects I could use such as the reverse and slow mo effect, however in a more brief manner; including the camera shots and costumes.
